Essay On A Journey By Bus

Though quite young I am fond of traveling. Our house is near the public bus stand. Besides, the rail station is about twenty kilometres from our town. So most people travel by bus. Last Saturday I had to attend a marriage party in Guwahati. Though my father was to attend it, he cancelled the program at the eleventh hour due to some unavoidable reasons and asked me to go.

Three buses regularly ply between our town Abhayapuri and Guwahati. But for the last week, one of the buses has not plied. So there was a great rush at the bus stand. I managed a window-side seat. Within a few minutes, the bus was overcrowded. Many passengers boarded the bus without tickets.

I feel suffocated in a crowd. Luckily most of the windowpanes were broken. So we had sufficient air on the bus. But the old bus was dirty, untidy, and jolting. To add to our misery, it began to drizzle. Soon it turned into a heavy downpour. The passengers sitting near the window were drenched. I was also wet to the skin. After some time the roof also began to leak. Passengers started shouting and swearing. But the driver, helper, and cleaner were indifferent. Of course, there was little that they could do.

By the time we reached Nalbari, the rain stopped. The bus halted there for about half an hour. I had tea there. Some of the passengers got down while others boarded the bus. However, the rush had subsided. But new trouble was awaiting us. From Nalbari, there were police checking almost every ten kilometres. The passengers had to get down. They thoroughly searched the passengers and the bus and then allowed the passengers to board again. A portion of 37 National High Way was very badly damaged near Rangia by the recent floods. So our bus took a Kacha route. It could cover about ten kilometres in an hour. There was great traffic on both sides. So the bus had to move at a snail's speed. The passengers were visibly impatient but there was nothing that they could do.

It was with great difficulty that we could reach our destination. I was late by about two hours. But I thanked God that I had, after all, reached Guwahati.
