Picnic Essay

The life of modern life is burdened with too many duties and responsibilities. From dawn to dusk he remains so busy that he has little time to stand and stare. A picnic provides an opportunity to escape at least for a day from the dullness and monotony of our life.

My father works in a bank and we live in a colony. On 2nd January 2006, a picnic was organized among the member of twelve families in the colony. The spot selected was Nijaraghat, a beautiful picnic spot near Morigaon.

There were hectic activities on the previous day. The grown-up males busied themselves in buying tit bit including vegetables, fish, meat, and other things. The females were busy collecting cooking materials and utensils. We, the children, were busy collecting cameras, musical instruments, etc. A Bus was hired for the purpose and it arrived at the campus at six in the morning. We set out at 6.30 a.m. We, the teenagers, at once set to work. There were three H.S.L.C.

Examinees including myself in the group of teenagers. We knew that this would be the last chance of merry-making before the examination. So we decided to enjoy the day to our heart's content. One of our friends started singing and the rest of us followed her. Heavy shouts were given out from time to time.

The tilting of the bus on the gravel roads rhymed with our songs. We reached the spot at 8 o'clock. Already a few parties had arrived there. They were putting up the tent. The grownups of our party began putting up a tent and the two hired cooks began digging holes to serve as our temporary ovens.

After breakfast some of us went for a dip in the nearby river, then free coursing through bushes and thickets started. Wildflowers were blooming all around. Bird's song echoed in the air. Some of the friends got in a country boat and at once set out with it. Fortunately, there was no strong current in the river and the boat did not betray its inexperienced occupants. It was almost noon then. We were hungry. So we returned to the spot.

When we reached the spot a tempting smell of cooked meat and fish tickled our noses. My mouth began watering. We ate with relish. We rested for a while. Then we had a session of dance and music. We danced until we were exhausted. By and by the plane of the midday sun declined to yield the place to the cool evening. The light was fast fading and it was time for our return journey. Just then a jackal with her young ones was coming out of a bush. We, the children, ran a shelter. The poor jackal could hardly think of the trouble and at once it took to its heels. The young babies followed their mother.

By the time we reached home, thick darkness enveloped the evening. Tired and exhausted I retired to bed early.
